A beautiful pair deserves care
The right pair of heels can last for years. What separates a pair that looks new from one that looks worn is rarely the shoe itself. It's how it's cared for between wears.
These are the habits we recommend for every Aveylia pair.
Before the first wear
- Protect the soles. New leather soles can be slippery and wear quickly. A cobbler can add a thin rubber sole guard, which adds grip and extends the life of the shoe.
- Treat suede first. Apply a suede protector spray before the first wear and let it dry fully. It helps repel water and marks.
- Break them in at home. Wear new heels around the house for short periods before a long day out.
Everyday care
- Wipe after wearing. Use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from leather. For marks, use a cloth that's lightly damp, never wet.
- Brush suede gently. Use a suede brush, always in one direction, to lift the nap and remove dust.
- Polish patent leather. A soft cloth brings back the shine. Avoid storing patent pairs touching each other, as the finish can transfer.
- Care for details. Wipe metallic and gilded hardware with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid household cleaners.
Conditioning leather
Leather is a natural material, and it dries out over time. Every few months, apply a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth. Test it on an inside area first, and let it absorb fully before wearing.
If they get wet
Stuff the shoes with plain tissue paper to absorb moisture and hold their shape. Let them dry naturally at room temperature. Never use a heater or hairdryer, as heat cracks leather and hardens suede.
Storing your heels
- Keep them in a dust bag. It protects against dust, light and scratches.
- Hold their shape. Use shoe trees or acid-free tissue in the toes.
- Avoid sunlight. Direct light fades colour, especially on lighter shades like ivory and taupe.
- Store upright. Avoid stacking heels on top of each other.
Know when to see a cobbler
Heel tips wear down with use. Replacing them early is inexpensive and protects the heel itself from damage. If you hear a click of metal on the pavement, it's time.
Rotate your pairs
Leather needs a day to rest and release moisture after wear. Rotating between pairs helps every pair last longer, and gives you a reason to build your collection.
